Texas Invasion 2010, Pt. 4: Shopping and Sushi

8/11/2010

Due to the insanity of the past two weeks, this is being updated nearly a week and a half after it actually happened. And since I came home from Texas yesterday, I'm still running on adrenaline and something around 6 hours of sleep, so forgive me if I forget some details.

In fact, I may not even comment on the pictures from here out--there's not that much to comment upon, really--so maybe I can get the rest of the Texas Invasion series up in a couple of days and down-shift to a relative sense of normality. Ahhh...

To put it concisely, we went to the mall and had an absolute blast trying on dresses. Unbeknownst to us when we first entered the mall, everyone was having clearance sales. *headdesk* Hence, I now have two ball-room-type dresses and a summer dress for under $50, and I'm still wondering what the heck I'm going to wear them at. Sigh.
Picture
{2}
They're awful purty dresses, though...

I actually wore this dress to Christa's graduation party...it was very staticky, as I found out when I sat next to a balloon. XD (It decided to travel with me for the next ten minutes. Hilarity ensued.)

May I say that this little hat was completely and totally adorable?

(The subject is awful pretty too. XD)

Aaand at the hibachi grill! This was my third time at the restaurant, but the first time I'd sat at the grill. And this was 'Shlee and Christa's first ever visit to a Japanese restaurant.

I'm starting to drool just thinking about the place...help...

Now this guy was great...the cooks are trained to be entertaining as well as make the meal, so he juggled his knives and spatulas and tossed bits of scrambled egg in our mouths (Christa missed four times. It was hysterical. XD) and juggled a raw egg and generally was highly entertaining.

And we must never forget the 'Japanese Dr. Pepper' (soy sauce) or the 'sexy sauce' (some kind of a sweet dip). It's making me drool again. Help...
Picture
{12}
Oh yes, oil and fire, a great combination. XD
Picture
{13}
Help me, Rhonda, I'm starting to revert to Pioneer Woman sayings. But it was gooooood, man.
Picture
{14}
'Shlee ordered a bento box, but we won't hold that against her. XD
Picture
{15}
*sigh* Yes, I did leave my truck in this abhorrent state of parking for well over an hour. I shall go crawl in a hole and die now.

Tune in next time for another visit to Wildcat Springs with pictures to prove it...until then, I shall always remain,

Your hostess,

The Fox

Sushi Resturant: July Edition

7/5/2010

Aah, the sushi restaurant...a place were the fish is raw and the stomach is sated...where friendship grows and sake flows.

(Just kidding on that last part. But this IS a sake jar and shot glass.)
Picture

Is that not the most adorable thing you've ever seen?? Between that and the teapots I was a spazz attack waiting to happen!

So Saturday we (Mom, me, Will, and two friends, Debbie and Emily) all went to the sushi restaurant. Deb and Emily had never been to said restaurant, and we were all under the impression that we were there for Japanese cooking lessons. We still don't know what these lessons entailed, because when we got there we found out that the lessons were off for that day. Probably because it was the weekend of the 4th...but we had called twice in the last two weeks to double-check and were told that it was still on.

We stayed for lunch anyway, and the manager (I assume he was a junior manager or something...?) gave us three free sushi rolls in recompense. (They were HUGE, too...at least ten slices per roll, and simply amazing. I wish they had told us what was in them...)
Picture
{2}
This was my salad. And it may look kind of gross, but that dressing is AMAZING. Mom asked what was in it, and apparently it's orange, butter, mayonnaise, and ginger. Those may be the only ingredients, or there may be more to it. I'm not sure, because the servers talked with very thick accents and it was kind of hard to understand... ^^;
Picture
{3}
Will and Emily, who sat on either side of moi, ordered an onion soup for their side. It's a clear broth, but VERY flavorful and rich. Yum.
Picture
{4}
These were some of the 'free sushi rolls'...and while I still have absolutely no idea what was in them, they were AMAZING. My mouth waters just to think of it...
Picture
{5}
...I got a picture of Emily's too, just because I could (and also because I had eaten one of my little rolls before I took the picture XD)
Picture
{6}
Now this is the real stuff. I couldn't tell you what each of these is, but I do know that there's salmon, red snapper, and tuna on there.

Y'know, for raw fish I'm still rather surprised that it doesn't taste fishy. I dunno. It's very mild in flavor.
Picture
{7}
Will ordered a lunch bento box, with shrimp and vegetables tempura ('tempura' just means 'fried in batter' XD). The long thin things are the shrimp--somehow they get it to lie flat instead of traditionally curled. I have NO idea how it's done. XD
Picture
{8}
And Emily ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box. We all had rice, and may I say that while I have no idea what they did to it, it was AMAZING. Like it had been cooked in a broth or something, and with tiny bits of egg and veggies mixed in.

I didn't get a picture of my plate because by the time I had remembered to take one I had already eaten much of what was there... XD But it was some kind of chicken with veggies and a slightly sweet sauce over all, with a mound of brown rice to the side. It was AMAZING.
Picture
{9}
I was looking around the restaurant and saw this samurai dude looking down at us from a shelf. In real life he's maybe a foot tall.

He's also a very unhappy samurai.

(I got a picture of Will making a face similar to this, but he won't let me post it. *pouts*)
Picture
{10}
Upon leaving Emily ran over to one of these chairs to see how comfortable it was...which turned into more of us sitting down with her, and before I know what was happening we were posing for a group picture. XD Four waiters came over to mug the camera, and it was fabulous.

I've gotten a bit of a reputation there, because I take pictures of my food before I eat it. They find that hilarious, for some reason...but I guess that'd be like someone taking pictures of their cheeseburger before diving in. XD

(Granted, all the food here at the sushi place is much, MUCH better and prettier than a cheeseburger. But I digress.)
Picture
{11}
From left to right: Debbie, Mom, Emily, Will, and me

I couldn't tell you who the waiters were, except one was named Tony and the girl was Sylvia. I think. That's what it sounded like her name was, anyway.

And then we went to WalMart and nearly fell asleep in the aisles from eating too much food and went home and took two-hour naps to sleep it off. The end.

Your hostess,

The Fox

SUSHI!!

Last Saturday Mom and I went on a little shopping expedition.

For those people who know my mom this is a very rare occurance, because both she and I rather dislike shopping in general. But we had to get some groceries and stock up on supplies for the gym concession stand (we provide foodstuffs for baseball/softball/basketball games).

Hobby Lobby was also involved. Shhh....
Picture
{2}
Anyway. Before we went on this shopping expedition we stopped by the Japanese resturant...you know, the one we visited a few months agoand were completely and thoroughly impressed? Yeah.
Picture
{3}
I had tea this time...not necessarily because I wanted tea, but because I wanted to get a picture of the totally adorable teapot and matching cups. XD
Picture
{4}
Isn't that just too cute?? Gah.

I've decided that when I grow up (...still saying that at 18 XD) I'll be the person who collects mugs and teapots, just because they're cool-looking. Mwee hee hee...
Picture
{5}
Anyway. This time we were brave and had REAL sushi. Like, the raw fish kind. (There were five pieces when we started out, but I forgot to take a picture XD)

I was actually kind of surprised--there was very little to no seasoning, but the fish actually had a very mild taste of its own (it didn't taste 'fishy' though). We forgot to ask our waiter what kind of fish it was, but we think there was salmon, tuna, shrimp, and two other kinds that we still don't know. XD

The green playdoh-looking-stuff on the plate is wasabi, the clump of orange-pink is pickled ginger. I could eat pickled ginger all day long... *drools*
Picture
{6}
And then...there was THIS.

Oh my goodness gracious, was this soup ever good...our waiter described it as 'seafood soup--very spicy' XD. It had shrimp, some kind of fish, shredded cabbage (very, VERY thinly sliced), mushrooms...it was amazing. Mom and I were trying to figure out what was in it so we can recreate it sometime. XD And it was seriously hot--the first bite wasn't too bad, but the second bite I had to cough and gasp a bit after swallowing. But it was goooood.
Picture
{7}
*dissolves in a whimpering puddle* Ohh, these were SO good...the ones on the left are California rolls (crab meat, avocado, cucumber, and cream cheese), and the ones on the left are eel rolls (eel, avocado, and I'm not sure what else). Despite the fact that the main ingredient is eel they were amazingly, supremely good--a little sweeter than the California rolls, but still as amazing.

...I'm drooling now. Darned picture...
Picture
{8}
One of the waiters saw me taking pictures of the food (I'm sorry, but I'm a blogger; that's what I do) and offered to take a picture of Mom and me enjoying ourselves.

(Fortunately you can't see most of my clothes--I wasn't able to change out of my workout clothes before leaving and hence I was kind of a mess. XD
Picture
{9}
And THEN we got a picture of our waiter. XD Ironically he's the one we had last time--and he remembered us. ^-^ (He also remembered my name--I'm not sure how, because it's been three months since we were there last.)

Originally he was going to make gang signs to be funny, but Mom made him stop. XD

If he had, I'm sure that I would be one of the only bloggers in the world who has a picture of a Japanese man making gang signs in a sushi resturant.

...but don't hold me to that. XD
Picture
{10}
So we ate too much and signed up for a sushi class next month...I tell you what, I wish that I could make sushi like that because I could eat that stuff forEVER. It's AMAZING.

Then we left and got a dead battery in the parking lot of Aldi's. The end. XD

Your hostess,

The Fox

(P.S. Obviously we made it home from Aldi's in one's piece...but that's another story for another time.)
