What she told me was that there had been an 8.9 earthquake in Japan, and that there were tsunami warnings for the entire west coast of Alaska, where my brother and sister-in-law live (in Ketchikan, to be exact).
As the morning has continued (for the hour and twenty minutes that I've been up, anyway) I have been reassured by fact that their apartment is 250 feet above sea level, there are mountains in the vicinity should they need to evacuate, the islands outside the coast will act as a buffer, etc. But I was curious to see what was going on in the rest of the world, so I poked around online until I found some news footage.
(I don't have a TV--what else could I do?)
Just...pray for the people involved. I have no words for this right now.
