New Years' and Hoarfrost

1/2/2011

0 Comments

Hoarfrost, for the unaware, is what happens when a night is very foggy and the temperature dips below freezing point. The effect, instead of a heavy dew in the morning, is where ice crystals form and 'stack' on themselves to create a look of icy 'fuzz'.

On a non-scientific point, I just plain love the look. XD
Picture
{1}
See what I mean? It's just gorgeous.

Well, New Years' Eve was two nights ago. It's kind of strange to know that another year has come to a close...I mean, isn't it always a bit of a strange feeling? As it is, I'm not sure whether to make this a journal that concentrates on 'accomplishments' or whatever for the previous year...that seems kind of cliche. So consider this a ramble more than an actual concentrated journal entry. XD
Picture
{2}
(This is spider webs, by the way. I thought they looked awesome).

A LOT has changed over the past year. I'm not exactly sure how much I've grown up--I certainly hope I have, but sometimes I wonder how one measures maturity. Is it determined by how well I do a job, relate to people, what I've 'done', what I can potentially do?

I'd like to think I've grown up a bit. I've certainly changed in certain areas--withdrawing and becoming more cautious in some respects while becoming more outgoing and competent in others.

(Yes, that IS rather intentionally vague. I'm not sure how far I'd like to go into that right now.)
Picture
{3}
My brother has gotten married...I've invited people from out of state to visit (and visited people from out of state about 3 times)...my family has grown by about 15 people...I've finished what I hope will be my last year of school...I've fallen in love (or thought I had) only to be forcibly thrust out of it by the other person...my photography skillz have improved dramatically...
Picture
{4}
See what I mean about 'accomplishments'? Some of them ring hollow, as if they don't really matter. I go through this every year.
Picture
{5}
Sigh. Not quite sure what to say after this, except for 'happy new year' and hoping optimistically that the beginning of 2011 will be much better than the beginning of 2010.

(Considering that my siblings-by-choice are coming to visit in 8 days, I don't think I have a whole lot to worry about there. XD)
Picture
{6}
(This is a clothespin, by the way. Very cool ice effect. *lurves the macro setting*)

Coming up in the long run is the Floridian invasion (sort of like the Texas invasion, but in the winter and with three guys instead of two girls...okay, so there's no similarity whatever. Heh.) in 8 days, going to see Les Miserables with my brother's International club in February, going to see Road to the Horse in February as well, and HOPING to squeeze a trip to Florida in sometime in April. I need to go longer next time. Like...a MONTH. 8D

Or maybe a week and a half. I dunno.
Picture
{7}
Still optimistically planning and hoping that I get my computer back sometime in the near future (it basically died on New Year's Eve, which made me VERY frustrated),

A New Chapter...And An Impeding Visit

12/5/2010

2 Comments

Well, things are going to be changing around here a bit.

Not on the website. But here, in normal life. That place where I am forced to spend most of the time? Yeah, there.

Anyway...so finals are in less than two weeks. After said finals are finished I am quitting my two current jobs (cleaning houses and working at the gym) and switching to working more-or-less full-time for our farrier. I'm not certain about ALL the particulars yet, but the way I understand it I'll be holding horses, learning, acting as assistant/go-fer/etc, and basically getting some horse-training experience under my belt. I'm rather excited about this...

As far as school goes, I'm taking some time off. I probably COULD keep going part-time, but...I'm getting REALLY tired of school. There are some classes I really like (I've loved doing Advanced Photoshop this semester), but there are also some classes that I reallly loathe because they're very much common sense, but still required. So...I'm gonna fly the metaphorical coop and start working with horses full-time.

The taking school off thing actually works quite well in January, when my brothers-in-law are coming to visit.
Picture
{1}
Yeah. These strange people. XD

Actually, I can't WAIT for them to come visit. Almost every day is spent with texts, Facebook message, or phone call that basically says "CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YA'LL!!!!!" I think all parties involved are rather excited. XD

Oh, and this guy is coming too!
Picture
{2}
Good ol' Gabe Lynn...he's almost weirder than the other two combined. Almost.

Actually, I take that back. ALL of these guys have a particular brand of weirdness that caters nicely to the way my family works. And when Gabe and Gabi are in near proximity, something called G2G Platinum happens.....

Don't ask me what that is. It just HAPPENS. And it's why you shouldn't have very many Gabes in close proximity. XD

Suffice to say we're all excited out of our minds...and I foresee long days of trying to cram everything we wanna do in just a few days. Just sayin'.

So...suffice to say there are several things that I am looking forward to ending, starting, and continuing...and it's only a matter of time 'til they do so.

Some Items

I  have a new picture in the Doodle-art category.
Picture
{Shy}
For some reason I could see this on a t-shirt or something...I dunno.

And this morning, we had FROST. A HEAVY frost. For the first time this year. I was sitting down pulling my boots on (I had overslept and was rushing out to feed the horses), and literally GASPED when I looked out the window.
Picture
{1}
I love it when things are still green and growing, and they get that fuzzy edge of frost early in the morning....it's like a dichotomy of growth. To loosley quote Van Gogh in 'Vincent and the Doctor' (when he's talking about sunflowers):

"I find them complex--always somewhere between living and dying..."

Such a great episode. I love Doctor Who. ^-^
Picture
{2}
I love the briskness of a first frost...I ran outside without bothering to put anything other than a coat on, and when I went back inside my hands were numb and starting to turn red. Part of that was because I had to break ice on the trough (YES THERE WAS ICE TOO GAAAAHH), but it's still so neat. I love it all.
Picture
{3}
Picture
{4}
Combine the frost with the shadows cast by the rising sun, and it's just beautiful.
Picture
{5}
Picture
{6}
Picture
{7}
For once, my legs are LOOOONG. XD

I was wearing a velvet frock coat in this picture, and can I say that I LOVE the silhouette a frock coat casts? I just love long coats in general. Gah.
Picture
{8}
Picture
{9}
Picture
{10}
Oh yes, here's the ice on the trough. I had to break it with my BARE HANDS. XD

(Note to self: start keeping a pitchfork next to trough for ice-breaking and scooping. /note)
Picture
{11}
I almost didn't put the horses out on pasture, because I wasn't sure how they'd go about eating grass-sicles...but they didn't seem to mind its semi-frozen state. XD
Picture
{12}
With the first frost comes the realization that winter is not far off, coats, jackets, and scarves have a place in one's wardrobe again (and don't have to be forcibly included, such as in my case--I wear them because I like them, not necessarily because they're needed), and soon it'll be time for roaring fires in the wood stove and movie nights galore.

Javert

10/14/2010

Picture
{1}
Unlike his namesake, Javert isn't very keen on rules.
Picture
{2}
Especially when those rules mean 'don't run away and come back when I call'.

(In the above picture I cheated--I had a treat in my hand.)

(Food overrides all rules.)
Picture
{3}
He even SITS for food. Feh.

If there was a squirrel in the vicinity, however, he would be GONE. As in GONE WITH THE WIND (or at least across town).

We had an experience with a squirrel the other day. Generally, when I'm bringing him in from being on his tie-out he's so frantic to get inside that he races up to the door and dances around waiting for someone to open said door. I don't have to hold his collar, and he can run as fast as he likes to the door.

But two days ago, he saw A SQUIRREL. I had already let go of his collar, because 99.9% of the time he DOES run to the door, and...well...he was gone.

Gone as in to the apple orchard, where he proceeded to fling himself at a tree and stare up at the wild creature in its leafy depths.
Picture
{4}
(He looks so innocent here. BUT THE INNOCENCE LIES.)

Fortunately the rule that 'food trumps all reason' still held, even though he KNEW that I was trying to catch him and spent about seven minutes playing keep-away. I pretended to have a treat, his overwhelming greed overcame him, and the game of keep-away was concluded.
Picture
{5}
My conclusion: a fence might be a wise investment someday, and just because my dog is named after a law-abiding character does not mean that he himself will be law-abiding too. It just doesn't work that way.

(And yes, we were on a tennis court in these pictures--it's a great place to let him run and teach him to come when called, because of the fences. AND IT'S FREE. :D)

October 1st

Ordinarily I might ask where September went, but since most all blog posts at the beginning of a month begin with that lament I shall forbear.

Instead, since I haven't done a 'life update' lately, I can do one of those instead. All in agreement? Yes? Then onward!
Picture
{1}
Tonight it's supposed to be in the mid-30s for a low. Lately the cats have been not-so-subtly trying to worm their way into the house, but today their insistence has been even more noticeable than usual. As I write this Tiger (pictured above) is sitting at the window looking in and wishing that he were inside.

The cats know that it's going to be a tough winter. Even Gooky has been acting extra-nice in an attempt to get inside.

Tonight is also when a semi-legendary football game is to be played in our town. Since I have no interest whatsoever in football or its ilk I have plans to stay home and watch WALL-E.

WALL-E trumps football ANY day of the week. XD
Picture
{2}
I also made cookies today!

Cookies are goooood, man.
Picture
{3}
So is cookie dough.

*omnomnom*

The cookies, unfortunately, are not for us...they are for Will and his marching band tonight (they're playing for the football game). But that doesn't mean that I can't snitch the occasional glob of dough or cull out the imperfect cookies.
Picture
{4}
And then...there's THIS.

Absolutely decadent mac-and-cheese on steroids. Or something. I was starving this morning/afternoon and couldn't find anything prepared to eat, and my other choices were beef ramen and oranges. So I made this.
Picture
{5}
It has bacon, caramelized onions, milk, butter...very creamy and delicious. Yum.

I should get hungry with nothing cooked in the house more often. XD

Picture
{6}
Oh yes, here are my latest endeavors in paper-making. Let's just say that making paper is a lot harder/more time-consuming than it initially sounds. XD

These all have differing materials/amounts of certain materials in them, so from left to right: (1) mostly paper with a tiny bit of denim; (2) all denim, roughly blended; (3) all denim, finely blended; (4) equal amounts denim and paper with a handful of grass tossed in for color.

I'm not sure how much I like the grass one--it smells very grassy, and not  pleasantly so. I really like the finely blended denim, but it takes about 5 solid minutes of pulsing in the blender to get it that smooth. The paper with a tiny bit of denim is the best as far as texture/thickness/color goes...I dunno. This is only my second batch, so I have plenty of time to experiment.
Picture
{7}
I have 8x10 frames to make these with...but as you can see from the rough edges I'm still working on getting my pages the same size/width. If I ever get GOOD (that is, uniform) about making these I'll see if I can sell them locally...handmade paper is a pretty interesting venue. And not just for the selling factor.

......~*~.......

So today I saw a guy at Walmart that looked freakily like M. He was parked two places away from me and followed me into the store--I was going to take a good look before going into the store, but when I glanced at him he gave me this funny look and I looked away.

I didn't see him after entering the store, but for the next couple of hours (even while driving home) I kept looking over my shoulder, feeling like M was there watching me. I'm sure it's all mental...but it feels like the guy has been haunting me lately. Which is weird, because I haven't seen him all summer.

I'm...not sure what the point of that little digression was. Isn't it weird, though, how another person can totally forget that you exist, and you're still thinking about them occasionally? It's such a peculiar feeling...

.......~*~.........

Tomorrow is the Renne Faire...it's a couple of towns over, and the first one we've had in this area. As a result, it's very small, will only span two days, and is free of admission. Mwee hee hee.

I was asked to be in a pirate skit, so I'm in two showings for that...Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon, to be exact. I'm going to get a friend to film the skit, (a) because I have no idea what we look like onstage, and (b) I MIGHT put it up here. Maybe. If we're good. XD I have speaking parts for a role that was originally meant for a guy, so I can't vouch for how great I'll be. *shrug*

I was also asked to be a vendor, and I seriously thought about it (mostly because as a performer I wouldn't be charged to have a booth). But I don't have very many items, so that idea is out. Maybe next year, right?

And...I guess that's about it for life-related updates. Unless I forgot something. (That's a valid concern around here.) I'm going to assume that this is good for now...happy October 1st! There's only one October 1st, 2010, so make it a good one!

Self-Portraits

9/22/2010

Picture
{1}
I always feel awkward when taking self-portraits.
Picture
{2}
If there's no one to respond to, I don't smile, and since the unsmiling face isn't always the greatest I start taking pictures of features or distancing myself from the camera or getting a more 'washed out' look.
Picture
{3}
Or I lose my balance while the self-timer runs and end up getting an AWESOME picture like this. XD

(On a side note: skinny jeans do not make me look skinny. -_-)
Picture
{4}
(On another side note, I like feet pictures.)
Picture
{5}
Picture
{6}
These were taken Monday, on my way home from class...it had been a particularly frustrating session in Photoshop (vector masks and rasterized images are NOT all they're cracked up to be), so instead of going directly home I went around the lake. This ledge thingy is by the dam at the north end of the lake, and a lot of fun to walk on.
Picture
{7}
And there was a really nice breeze (a storm was moving in--I love storms), and the water looked so nice, and the temperature was so cool...it was a much-needed change from the Photoshop madness.
Picture
{8}
An instance where I didn't smile...combination of a long day and general melancholy. Meh.
Picture
{9}
But I really liked how the 'serious' ones turned out.
Picture
{10}
I think I've been in a rather serious mood lately...in a little less than a month I'm turning 19. And while 18 seemed more like a threshold to adulthood, 19 seems a bit more serious and less of a prelude.
Picture
{11}
Along with that crossing-the-threshold-into-adulthood line is the realization that I earn enough to cover my basic costs plus a tiny bit to spend and save. I work something around 30+ hours a week in my part-time jobs, which may not seem like a lot to a person working a 'real' job but factor in another 10 hours of class-time (not counting homework time) and I always feel highly rushed--too rushed to do the things I want, like ride the horses on a regular basis, walk the dog, and draw/paint.
Picture
{12}
As a consequence, I've decided to work smarter, not harder.
Picture
{13}
Let's just say that Mom and I have been brainstorming, and we've got ideas involving my selling things for people...the kinks haven't totally been worked out yet, but it's a viable idea.
Picture
{14}
Will things slow down? I don't know. If nothing else I may be able to work from home, at my own pace, and feel like I'm doing things slower (and I'd be able to take time off whenever I wanted XD).

I love the prospect of being self-employed...
Picture
{15}
So ideas are flowing, and while I'm not ready to quit my normal jobs I'm certainly looking into other venues. And who knows? Maybe I'll actually get somewhere with 'em.

Your pondering hostess,

The Fox

Dreaming

9/17/2010

Picture
While looking up random things on Google and coming across the "Molly is a dreamer" line, that got me to thinking about dreams.

On a random tangent I've been dreaming a bit less, or forcing myself to dream less, because to dream is to be idealistic. And lately inward idealism, while a noble idea, has been making me depressed rather than energized because in this day and age it is mocked and devalued. To dream of finding a good, faithful spouse seems childish because look at how many people go off the deep end after decades of being together, or how many losers pay lip service to the idea of faithfulness and in no time at all go back on their promises. To dream of having a friend you can trust is silly, because look at the people who portray themselves to be someone and end up being COMPLETELY different from the person they pretended to be. To dream of taking life by the horns and doing something you love, even if it's unpractical, is stupid because what if you fail and end up penniless on the streets? To dream of doing something crazy and fantastic and wonderful is frightening, because it IS crazy and wonderful and tempered with just enough risk of failure that most people don't do it.

And to dream...to dream is intimidating, because sometimes you can't imagine yourself being good enough to try whatever it is you want to try, and you shrink back and try not to think too hard about your dreams, because to bring about its realization means you have to be brave enough to admit that you need to better yourself and be jolted out of your comfort zone. And THAT is why, while growing up, people force themselves to stop dreaming. Because it is hard, and requires effort to bring about to realization.

The Magic of Theater

7/26/2010

3 Comments

I am of the opinion that, while some of the best pictures due to lighting and set-up etc were caught onstage, some of the best pictures story-wise were caught backstage.

Isn't that the way these things always go, though? The polished story is the front that everyone sees, but it's the little things that happen backstage and create that camaraderie to which only people who have been thrown together for a common purpose can relate. It's part of the magic of theater--the creating of friendships, the stories of people saying and doing silly things (as only people can do)...that's the part that I always remember the most. Behind the established story is one that thrives in and of itself, simply because there were people who cared enough to bring it to life.
Picture
{1}
For example: this may look like Will chilling near the dressing rooms. But by being there I knew that he had just gotten his makeup applied and was hurrying up to the stage for a microphone check.
Picture
{2}
By being there I knew that this was Bailey in the second try for a picture, in reality wearing a modified skirt (she's tiny) and waiting for the cue to go onstage.
Picture
{3}
By being there I knew that this was the frenzy five minutes before the show started, with me sitting up next to the curtain and alternately snapping pictures and peering out at the crowd...
Picture
{4}
...that this was Zach, killing time before his entrance as the narrator and being blinded by my flash (sorry 'bout that, by the way)...
Picture
{5}
That this was...uh...my foot, simply because I thought it looked kinda neat.

Okay, that's not really relevant. But hey, I was getting bored sitting eight feet off the ground behind the curtain and getting my feet tickled by random passers-by.
Picture
{6}
That people were exhausted the last day, and resting near the stage door in an attempt to relax before going back onstage...
Picture
{7}
That this was Derek being...Derek... XD
Picture
{8}
That during intermission some of the background folks came out onstage to blink in the dazzling stagelight and get some much-deserved attention...
Picture
{9}
That someone's tap shoes had been slipped into a different dressing room and there was a bit of a flurry before they were found (and posed with)...
Picture
{10}
That this was the seniors, together after the last performance before going their separate ways in life.

I hadn't intended for this to be such a reminiscing post. But...those who have not been involved in a creative endeavor simply do not realize the things that happen in the background to bring a bunch of random people together to make something magical happen.

And that...that is the magic of theater.

That's what makes it all worthwhile.

And that's what makes us keep coming back.

The Fox

Popcorn for Dinner

7/2/2010

0 Comments

At the end of a long day filled with racing hither, thither, and yon, a simple dinner of popcorn and blueberries is all that one needs.

It helps if that one is female, has a small appetite, and doesn't have enough energy to make something more substantial. Just sayin'. XD
Picture
{1}
So this upcoming weekend/week looks to be a filled-to-the-brim one...tomorrow Mom and I are going to the sushi restaurant in order to take some lessons in the art of cooking Japanese food. *drools* We're all pretty excited about it...and pictures WILL be taken... XD

Sunday I'm not sure as to whether I'm going to be in the parade or not. I had signed up to ride the horse in said parade, but I found out today that some special people are coming to church and Mom invited them plus several friends over for lunch immediately after church, which ends sometime around 1. If I'm to be in the parade I would have to miss church and lunch (and I'd rather NOT miss it, because we've been working on an excellent series based on the book of Ruth for church, and I don't want to miss lunch because...well...I LIKE Sunday lunches... XD). So it's a conundrum of sorts.

After the parade I'm helping a photographer--which reminds me, I need to get some prints of pictures made, so I can make overtures to restaurants (there are several in town that sell local artists' work) and such. I'm not sure what I'm doing for the photographer yet, but I think it involves catching people's interest as they walk around the square and look at booths and such. So here's to that working out. *crosses fingers*

Then for the rest of the week there's the normal cleaning of houses and painting at rehearsals. Wednesday I'm meeting with a woman about taking pictures for her wedding (my first photography job!! Aaaahhh!!), and Friday I'm signing up for college classes this fall.

All in all, it's a most filled week. A funny side of all the busyness came out earlier, when I was trying to think of a reason not to pack another possible aspect of insanity (it involved a lady wanting to bring her young children over to ride the horse). Liability aside, I figured that my LIFE is my excuse to not take on any more responsibilities. XD

Minor rant ahead: I notice that when I ride the horse around town, I usually stop at least once to let some random kid (or two, or three) pet said horse. Colletta knows her job well enough to know that all she has to do is stand and graze, and she doesn't have any vices like kicking or biting. So I don't worry about kids flocking around to pet her. It's just when they (the kids) start dropping hints like 'I wish I had a horse' and 'She's so pretty, I wish I could ride her'; or when parents come out and say 'can we come over to ride sometime?' that things get kinda sticky.

I learned while giving 'riding lessons' (truthfully, most of the kids were so young that it was more like a glorified pony ride, but I digress) that there is SO much liability and unpredictable behavior on both the people and the horses' part that I'm not real comfortable with letting just anyone ride. And while Colletta may be a 'good' horse, she's also rather...ah...bossy. If an novice or someone who doesn't have much strength/confidence tries to ride her alone she has no qualms about seeing what she can get away with.

*sigh* And for some reason normal people don't seem to understand that...they have this mentality that horses are kind of like automatons that do what they're told, all the time, and that it can't be THAT hard to ride/take care of a horse/whatever. OR, they assume that the horse owner must have all this wonderful free time to ride and 'surely you can let us ride sometime too'.

...I ought to start telling people that I only get to ride two or three times a week, and my riding time is not synonymous with babysitting time. Or that I charge $60an hour, per kid. You know, to cover liability and that helmet I bought that they're borrowing and the time that I COULD be training and the time it takes me to saddle up and get her ready... XD

Actually, that isn't a half-bad idea. I ought to write up a sheet with my terms. *rubs hands together* See what happens when I brainstorm?? I start having Snidely Whiplash tendencies!

...that will be your only reference to Snidely Whiplash on this whole website. I thought I should point that out.
Picture
{2}
My annoyance with non-horse-folk aside, I suppose things have been going rather well. I have some pictures listed on my Etsy account to sell (please look at them? Please? *puppy eyes*), the painting at rehearsals is coming slowly but surely, I spent two days shoveling out the barn (finally finished *pumps fist*), and I think I'm getting a load of lime for the barn tomorrow.

(Crushed limestone, that is. Not the fruit.)

Last time we got a load of lime, we still had one horse. And it took all of us kids and three extra friends almost two days to get it all spread out.

*sobs* I'm gonna die....or at least, my arms and back are gonna die....where are a bunch of strong-backed friends when ya need 'em??
Picture
{3}
I'm sure Will can rustle up a few. He knows guys that like to show off their brawn. XD

Looking forward to a week of insanity,

The Fox

P.S. Don't forget--check out my Etsy account! That would make me very happy--and if you want to thrill me beyond belief ya could...oh, I dunno...maybe buy something? :D

I've Been Thinking...

Picture
I always sign my posts 'your hostess the Fox'. But lately I've been a rather poor hostess in the way of posts that have any relevance even to my own life.

(Going along with the hostess analogy, it's like inviting people to a party and then feeding them saltines--kind of dry, with no nutritional value XD)

So...consider this an effort to make some posts that have something to say, rather than just posting random pictures and hoping for the best. I've got some ideas that have been rattling around in my mind (mostly inspired by a chat I had with a friend of mine the other day--she and I are on totally opposite sides of the spectrum in nearly every way possible, and our debate made me think quite hard on a series of topics.), and it's just a matter of sitting down and writing what I've been thinking about at this point.
